The 2018 event was the most extreme event yet, with 11 teams taking on the traffic of the capital, the Chilean coastline, and of course, the Atacama Desert. This year saw the biggest changes to the competition to date. The objective was to align ourselves as much as possible with the technical regulations of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in order to achieve greater consistency between international solar car challenges, making it easier for teams to transition between events.
In the Solar Class, we officially introduced the new Cruiser category, which are multi-occupant vehicles designed to be practical, efficient and reliable, most closely reflecting a conventional vehicle. The Solar Class event took place over an even more challenging route of more than 2500 km, starting in the capital Santiago, and finishing in Arica in the far north of Chile. For the first time, the Solar Class event was held in a continuous format instead of a staged format, meaning teams began each day where they left off at the end of the previous day.
